What is an over/under bet?

An over/under bet (also called a totals bet) is a wager on whether a specified statistical total will be higher or lower than a number set by the bookmaker. In sports betting, the most common total is the combined score of both teams in a match.

How over/under betting works

The bookmaker sets a total — say 2.5 goals in a football match. Betting ‘over’ means you think there will be 3 or more goals. Betting ‘under’ means you think there will be 2 or fewer. The .5 ensures no push — goals are whole numbers, so the outcome must go one way. In higher-scoring sports, the bookmaker sets totals as whole numbers where a push is possible if the total lands exactly on the line.

Over/under in other contexts

The over/under concept applies beyond sports. Some casinos apply it to in-game mechanics. In craps, the Big 6/8 and pass line are effectively predictions about totals. In entertainment betting, totals might cover things like how many songs an artist performs at a concert. The principle is always the same: predict whether the actual value will exceed or fall short of the bookmaker’s line.
