What is a handicap in betting?
A handicap bet adjusts the effective starting score of one competitor to create a more balanced market between a strong favorite and a weaker opponent. The favorite receives a negative handicap (a head start for their opponent); the underdog receives a positive handicap.
How handicaps work
In football, if Team A is a strong favorite, the bookmaker might offer Team A -1.5 (they must win by 2 or more) and Team B +1.5 (Team B can lose by 1 or draw and the bet still wins). This makes both sides more evenly priced than a straight win market. Asian handicaps eliminate draws from the outcome space, offering a two-way market with refund options on specific handicap lines.
Handicaps in casino games
Blackjack basic strategy can be thought of as minimizing the house’s handicap. Craps pass line with full odds reduces the effective handicap to under 0.5%. In golf or horse racing betting, handicapping refers to the process of assessing each competitor’s likely performance. Regardless of the sport or game, a handicap adjusts a competition’s starting point to make the math more interesting.
