Basic strategy is a mathematically optimal set of decisions for every possible player hand versus every possible dealer upcard. Following it precisely minimizes the house edge to the lowest possible level — around 0.5% on a typical 6-deck game.
How it works
Basic strategy tells you exactly what to do in any situation: hit, stand, double, split, or surrender. Each decision is based on the statistical outcome across millions of hands. For example, always split aces and 8s, never split 10s or 5s, and double 11 against a dealer 2 through 10. The decisions are presented in a strategy chart organized by player total and dealer upcard.
How to use it
Basic strategy charts are freely available and legal to use in casinos (though memorization is preferable to a card at the table). It does not guarantee winning every session — variance still affects short-term results. What it does is ensure you never give the house extra edge through suboptimal decisions.
