Baccarat strategy: what actually works?
Baccarat is a game of pure chance. There are no drawing decisions for the player to make — the cards run according to fixed rules. No strategy system can change the house edge or improve your long-term expected return.
The only real strategy: bet selection
The Banker bet has a house edge of 1.06% and the Player bet has 1.24%. That’s the full extent of ‘strategy’ in baccarat from a mathematical standpoint. Always bet Banker if you’re focused on minimizing the house’s advantage. Avoid the Tie bet. Skip most side bets unless you’re playing for fun and accept the higher cost.
What doesn’t work
Scorecards and bead plates are offered at baccarat tables to track results. Players use patterns like ‘roads’ to look for streaks and predict outcomes. These systems are enjoyable rituals for many players but they have no predictive value. Past hands have no effect on future hands in a properly shuffled game. Betting systems like Martingale don’t improve expected outcomes either — they just change when losses occur, not whether they occur.
