What is a proposition bet?
A proposition bet (prop bet) is a wager on a specific event or outcome within a game that doesn’t directly relate to the final result. In sports betting, prop bets cover things like how many goals a player scores or whether a coin flip starts a match. In casino games, prop bets are center-table bets in craps on specific dice combinations.
Casino prop bets (craps)
In craps, proposition bets occupy the center of the table and include Any 7 (pays 4:1, house edge 16.9%), Any Craps (pays 7:1, edge 11.1%), and Hardways (rolling a double before a 7 or the number the easy way). These bets pay attractively but carry some of the highest house edges at any casino table. Dealers often suggest them but experienced craps players avoid them.
Sports prop bets
Sports proposition bets have become mainstream, especially in US sports betting. Player props (a quarterback’s passing yards, a basketball player’s points) are popular because they add engagement to watching a game. House edges on props vary widely — sharp sportsbooks offer tighter lines than recreational-focused books. The number of available prop markets has expanded dramatically with the growth of legal sports betting.
