What is tilt in gambling?

Tilt is a state where emotional frustration causes a player to make poor decisions, typically betting larger amounts or more recklessly than normal to recover losses. The term comes from pinball machines but is now widely used in poker, casino gaming, and sports betting.

What causes tilt

A significant loss, a bad beat, a perceived unfair outcome, or a long losing streak are common tilt triggers. The emotional response disrupts rational decision-making — instead of evaluating each bet or hand on its own merits, a tilting player’s decisions are driven by the desire to ‘get even.’ This usually leads to making bets with worse expected value than normal.

How to manage it

Recognizing tilt in the moment is the key skill. Signs include increasing your bet size after losses, playing games or stakes you normally wouldn’t, feeling angry or frustrated rather than relaxed. The best response is to stop playing immediately and take a break — leave the table, close the app, do something else. Returning after the emotional state has settled is far better than pressing on while tilted. Setting a loss limit that forces a session stop is a structural way to prevent tilt from doing serious damage.
