How do random number generators work?
A random number generator (RNG) is the algorithm that determines outcomes in online slots, card games, and digital roulette. It runs behind every spin, shuffle, and deal at online casinos.
PRNG vs TRNG
Most online casino games use a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG). This is a mathematical algorithm that produces sequences of numbers so complex that no pattern is detectable. True Random Number Generators (TRNG) use physical entropy sources like atmospheric noise, but PRNGs are sufficient for gaming and much easier to audit consistently.
A PRNG starts with a seed value, often derived from the timestamp at the moment you press spin. That seed feeds into the algorithm and produces a number, which maps to a specific outcome. The algorithm runs so quickly that pressing spin one millisecond later produces a completely different result.
How the RNG is audited
Before a game goes live, an independent testing lab runs millions of simulated rounds to confirm that the RTP matches what the provider claims and that no predictable patterns exist in the output. Certificates from these audits are published by the casino or game provider.
Regulators require periodic re-testing. If a software update touches the RNG, the game usually needs recertification before players can access the new version. This is part of why licensed casinos are not rigged in any meaningful sense.
Why no betting system beats an RNG
Each spin is statistically independent. The RNG has no memory of previous rounds. A long losing streak does not increase the probability of a win on the next spin. This is why strategies like the Martingale system do not overcome the house edge over time. They change the size and frequency of losses, not the mathematical advantage the casino holds.
