What is Spanish 21?

Spanish 21 is a blackjack variant played with a Spanish deck — a standard 52-card deck with all four 10s removed, leaving 48 cards per deck. To compensate, the game offers enhanced payouts and more liberal rules that tilt some of the advantage back to the player.

Key rule differences

Player blackjack always beats dealer blackjack. Player 21 always wins regardless of what the dealer holds. Special hands like 6-7-8, 7-7-7, and suited combinations pay bonus amounts. Late surrender and doubling after splitting are typically allowed. These rules offset the house edge created by removing the four 10s.

House edge considerations

Despite the better rules, removing the 10s hurts the player enough that Spanish 21 still carries a house edge. The basic strategy changes significantly from regular blackjack — decisions that are correct in a standard game are often wrong in Spanish 21 because the deck composition is different. If you play Spanish 21, use a strategy chart specific to this game rather than standard blackjack basic strategy.
