What is Gamblers Anonymous?
Gamblers Anonymous (GA) is a fellowship of people who share their experience and support each other in recovering from problem gambling. It uses a 12-step programme similar to Alcoholics Anonymous and is free to attend. There are no dues or fees for membership.
How GA works
GA meetings are open to anyone who has a desire to stop gambling. Members share their stories and experiences in a confidential group setting. The 12-step programme involves admitting powerlessness over gambling, seeking support, and making amends where possible. Sponsorship (a recovering gambler mentoring someone newer to recovery) is a core element. Meetings are held in person and online.
Finding a meeting
GA meetings operate in countries worldwide. In the UK, the GA website (gamblersanonymous.org.uk) lists meetings by location. Online GA meetings have expanded significantly, making support accessible regardless of location. GA also runs a Gam-Anon group for family members and friends, acknowledging the wider impact of gambling disorder on those close to the gambler.
