What is doubling down in blackjack?
Doubling down means you double your original bet after seeing your first two cards, in exchange for committing to receive exactly one more card. It’s a way to maximize your return when your starting hand is strong relative to the dealer’s upcard.
When to double down
Basic strategy specifies precise situations to double. The strongest double-down hands are totals of 10 and 11, where drawing a 10-value card gives you a near-unbeatable total. You also double soft hands in certain situations, like soft 16-18 against weak dealer upcards of 5 or 6. Some tables restrict doubling to 10 and 11 only. Tables that allow doubling on any two cards are better for players.
The risk of doubling
Doubling commits you to exactly one card with no option to hit again. If that card is a small one (like a 2 on your 11 giving you 13), you’re stuck with a weak total. That’s why doubling is only correct in situations where the math strongly favors you. Doubling in the wrong situation — like doubling a hard 16 — is a costly mistake.
