What is a blackjack side bet?

A blackjack side bet is a supplementary wager placed alongside your main bet at the start of a round. Side bets pay out based on specific card combinations appearing in your hand or the dealer’s upcard, independent of whether you win the main hand.

Common side bets

Perfect Pairs pays when your first two cards form a pair. 21+3 combines your two cards and the dealer’s upcard into a three-card poker hand, paying for flushes, straights, and three-of-a-kind. Lucky Ladies pays for specific two-card totals, with the highest payout going to two queens of hearts. Insurance (dealer ace) is technically also a side bet.

The math on side bets

Side bets carry significantly higher house edges than the main blackjack game — often 3-10% depending on the bet. They can produce large single-round payouts, which is why they appeal to players, but the long-term cost is high. Card counters sometimes use specific counting systems for side bets like Lucky Ladies when conditions are favorable, but for most recreational players, side bets cost more than they return.
