What is the difference between S17 and H17 in blackjack?
S17 and H17 refer to the dealer’s rule on soft 17 — a hand with an ace counted as 11 totaling 17. S17 (stand on soft 17) means the dealer must stand. H17 (hit on soft 17) means the dealer hits and can improve their total.
Why it matters for the house edge
H17 adds roughly 0.2% to the house edge compared to S17. When the dealer can hit soft 17, they have more opportunities to improve to 18, 19, 20, or 21. This increases how often the dealer beats player hands that would otherwise push or win against a dealer 17. For that reason, S17 tables are slightly better for the player.
How to spot the rule
The rule is usually printed on the table felt. Look for ‘Dealer must stand on all 17s’ (S17) or ‘Dealer hits soft 17’ (H17). Online games display this in the rules section before you play. When choosing between otherwise identical blackjack tables, prefer the S17 version if one is available.
