Is online gambling legal in Canada?
Online gambling in Canada is primarily regulated at the provincial level. Federal law doesn’t explicitly authorize or ban online gambling by private operators, but provinces have the authority to license and operate gambling within their territory. Several provinces now have regulated private online casino markets.
Provincial regulation
Ontario opened a fully regulated online casino and sports betting market in April 2022, allowing private licensed operators to compete alongside the provincial lottery. Other provinces (British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba) operate government-run iGaming sites. Alberta is working toward its own private market. Players in Ontario can access a competitive range of licensed casinos; players in other provinces may have fewer regulated options.
Playing offshore from Canada
Many Canadians play at offshore casinos not licensed by a Canadian province. There is no specific federal law that makes this illegal for individual players, but these sites don’t carry Canadian player protections. As provincial markets develop, more regulated local options are becoming available and these are the safest choice.
